Making Connections

News from Rainford Heritage Society

We have recently been connecting with other similar groups in the area to share ideas and resources and it has certainly been of mutual benefit.

Members of the Ormskirk Heritage Hub visited Rainford to see how we are starting to embed heritage information and resources in various settings throughout the village. It was a particularly wild and windy day when they were taken on a guided walk along the linear park to study several of the heritage boards along the way but they were still very impressed. They also visited the Village Hall to view the collection of artefacts in the cabinets and in the council chamber.

In return we were given the opportunity to view the fascinating  Ormskirk Heritage Micro Museum. This began with a community-led project which transformed a disused telephone box, located near the clock tower in Ormskirk town centre, into a miniature museum showcasing local history. It features rotating dioramas – three-dimensional scenes in miniature depicting stories and people of local historical interest. It’s definitely worth a look next time you’re shopping there.

Quizmaster Rob McGiff hosted another very successful quiz for us in The Junction Pub in March which was a sell out! Rob manages every time to put together a great compilation of questions, somehow suiting everyone, and which involve photos, music and laughs aplenty.

Our next event will be an illustrated talk about Margaret Evelyn Pilkington, The Rainford Suffragette and her work in St Helens in WWI. This will be delivered by one of our regular speakers, Claire Rigby, and will take place at The Junction Pub on Monday 11th May at 7pm.
